Fast Food Hacks
Let’s be honest, you are going to eat out. The frequency in which you do is directly correlated to the number of children under your care. Trust me, it’s science.
I judge not. Plenty a meal has been enjoyed under the golden arches of calorically dense shame. A busy work week, a road trip, scrambling after the kid’s practice, or just no energy to cook — this is where you can survive derailment. The move is not “never drive through.” The move is to pick the highest protein-to-energy version of whatever joint you are already in.
I went looking at published nutrition facts — official pages where they exist, and common tracker listings (MyFitnessPal / Carb Manager / FatSecret) for the no-bun and extra-meat versions. Menus move. Portioning is sloppy. If the numbers are on the screen, run × 10 yourself.
The list is not exhaustive. We focused on the low-hanging fruit — of the foods far from the health status of fruit — to hack our way to health in the drive-through. Lose the buns, find it in your soul to somehow ignore the fries, double the meat, grab a Coke Zero, and voilà… you’ve won fast food.
P:E is protein grams divided by carb grams plus fat grams. Green is more parts than fuel. Red is the opposite. What do we mean by “energy”?

- Nothing on this list is under 25% calories from protein. × 10 (40%) is the ideal. 30% or more is still fine.
- P:E is Dr. Ted Naiman’s protein-to-energy ratio: protein grams ÷ (carb grams + fat grams). Higher is better. Green is the good end. Red is the leftover-calories end.
- These numbers are roughly based on nutrition facts from restaurant websites. Take them with a grain of salt.
- If there are no available restaurants and you’re stuck with a hotel breakfast, a gas station, an airport — same rules still apply. Eggs, Greek yogurt, string cheese, a simple shake, jerky with a short ingredient list, diet soda. Grab protein. Skip the pastry and the orange juice.
