But it's fake! What are nonnutritive sweeteners exactly?

Reference: Dr. Layne Norton

Sugar is a sweet signal plus fuel. Nonnutritive sweeteners are the signal with almost no fuel. That is the whole trick.

Because they are hundreds to thousands of times sweeter than sugar, you only need a tiny amount. Typical diet-soda intake stays well below the amounts considered safe every day for a lifetime. Petri-dish headlines and mega-dose rat studies are not how people actually use Diet Coke.

They are useful for cutting sugar and calories. They are not required, and they are not a magic weight-loss tool. If you have PKU, avoid aspartame. “Sugar-free” still does not make a cookie a health food.

Sweet signal. Almost no fuel. Educational only.

General education, not a personal treatment plan. If you have a medical condition — kidneys, pregnancy, disordered eating, anything your clinician is already following — talk with them before you overhaul how you eat.
